Client Bio

Children’s Health is a nationally ranked pediatric hospital system in North Texas dedicated to providing care for children across its several hospitals, specialty centers, and pediatric clinics. One of their top priorities is helping the approximately 556,000 children in Texas manage their asthma.

Overview

Children’s Health partnered with Invene to overhaul their existing, 2-star rated asthma management app. The goal was to help children manage their asthma while reducing the 5,000 plus asthma-related visits to the emergency department Children’s Health that receives per year. The app was released at the beginning of the 2020 school year when caregivers where managing their child’s asthma in the COVID era.

Challenge

This project had a complex web of stakeholders – Children’s Health executive staff, IT, clinical providers, and children with asthma along with their caregivers. All software had to adhere to HIPAA guidelines as it contained personal health information (PHI). The app had to be easy-to-use otherwise children would quickly abandon it. As the providers did not want children entering in their own medications, doctors needed an efficient way to input this data.

Solution

Invene created Asthma Buddy, a mobile app available for both iOS and Android. It is supported by a back-end web portal providing admins the ability to manage patient information, medications, educational material, and push notifications.

Result

Asthma Buddy, created by Invene, allowed Children’s Health to free themselves of their previous two-star rated mobile app. Asthma Buddy has been rolled out to all their asthma patients and providers and has been a win. Invene trained Children’s Health internal team on the mobile app and web portal, which has allowed Children’s Health developers to take over change requests and maintenance.
